Calculating your property's Green Date

How to calculate your Green Date using the CliMate app

Your Green date is one of the key dates you should know for your property.  It is the date at which there is a 70% chance that your growing season would have started.

Once you have adequate soil temperature and day length, you just need rain to kick off your growing season.  The amount of rain needed will vary from poperty to property and is mainly dependant on your soil type.

  • Heavy/dark soils typically require 50mm rain over a 10 day period
  • Lighter/red soils typically require 37mm over a 7 day period

  • Download the CliMate app and go to "How Often"

  • enter the amount of rain and the time period it needs to fall over according to your soil type (see above for typical rain amounts for different soil types)
  • Where it says "at " Select the closet weather station to your property
  • Where it says "between " select the earliest date at which your soil temp and day length would be adequate to produce meaningful growth should you recieve rain
  • Keep adjusting the second date where it says "and"  untill you find the date where the arrow on the picture goes to the Green and says 70%.
This date will be your "Green Date" (where there is a 70% probablility that your growing season will have started)

Now that you have your property's Green Date, you can use it to assist you in planning other key events in your business such as the optimum timing of mating, and graze planning when you are budgeting your feed in the non growing  season through to your green date.
