Creating or adding animals: using the "Birth" function
The Birth function is used to record natural increase in the livestock inventory. This information will show in your stock flow report.
The Birth function is used to record natural increase in the livestock inventory. This information will show in your stock flow report.
The birth event will add livestock progeny, whether they are calves, lambs, or weaners, to an existing mob/herd.
A "Birth" event can be entered at any stage of your stocks lifecycle. This may be at the actual time of birth, at mustering/sorting, at branding/marking, or at separating from the main mob/herd.
This article explains how to enter a birth (natural increase) from the mob management screen.
Before you begin
Before entering a birth event for the first time it is recommended that the Livestock Setup section be reviewed to ensure that the required Stock Class/Stock Group (lamb / calf / weaner etc) for the new livestock exists.
To check stock class setup

Click on the Settings cog
in the top righthand corner of the MaiaGrazing screen. -
Click on Stock Class Setup

Scroll the list of entered stock classes.
If the required Stock Class does not exist, please refer to "How to - Set up Stock Class" to create the required stock class.
To check stock group setup

Click on the Settings cog in the top righthand corner of the MaiaGrazing screen.

Click on Stock Group Setup

Scroll the list of entered stock groups.
If the required Stock Group does not exist, please refer to "Creating a new stock group" to create the required stock class.
Entering a Birth event

Click on 'Operations'

Click on 'Livestock'

Find the name of the mob/herd that the births are to be added to in the mob/herd list.

Hover the mouse pointer over the three dots to the right of the mob/herd name.

Click on "Birth" from the list

Click in the data box under 'Calving / Weaning / Branding date' (1)

Enter the date of the birth event (this is the date the animals will be active from in the MaiaGrazing program).

Click on the drop down box under 'Progeny Details' (2)

Click on the Stock Group name of the animals being added to the mob.

Click into the data entry box under 'Stock Name' (3)

Type over the existing 'Stock Item 1' label with your own label (eg. calves, lambs)

Click on the drop down box under 'Mother' (4)

Click on the maternal stock group. (This information is only visible in analytics reports)

Enter descriptive information for the birthed livestock:

number of head to be birthed (a)
-
weight per head (b),
-
feed demand rating (c), (This can be left at 0 if the mother is carrying the feed demand for herself and the progeny.)

price per kg (d) (optional)

Click on the drop down box under 'Progeny Details' again to add more stock to this birth event. (2)

Click on 'Save'.
If these birthed animals are now being split (drafted) from their mothers mob into their own new mob or an existing mob use the split function.
This new mob can then be moved to a new paddock/pasture following “How to – Move Mobs/herds to single paddock/pasture”
