Import a map file

How to import a map file, what kind of files can be imported and how to choose paddocks/pastures to import.

File types that can be imported by a user

  • .kml
  • .geojson

File types that must be imported by the support team

  • .shp

  • .kmz

If your map is in .shp or .kmz format please email the files through to the support desk. These files need some modification before they will import successfully.

Before attempting to upload a map file

Open your map file and check that:

  • paddock/pasture boundaries have been drawn as polygons

  • paddock/pastures have unique names in the map file

CAUTION

When a map file is imported into MaiaGrazing it will create NEW:

  1. paddock boundaries in the map setup screen, and

  2. paddock names in the paddock setup screen

Imported paddocks are NOT automatically matched with existing paddocks.

This needs to be done manually during the import process. How to match paddocks is in Step 4 of the import process below.

If you are uncertain please ask the support team for assistance.

Map imports can not be undone or reversed without support team assistance once saved.

This article explains the 4 steps required to import a map file into MaiaGrazing

Step 1: Navigate to the 'Map Setup' Screen

Step 2: Import your map file

Step 3: Choose which paddocks/pastures to import.

Step 4: Match manually entered paddock names with imported paddock/pasture boundaries.

How to import .kml or .geojson map files

Step 1: Navigate to the 'Map Setup' Screen

  • Login to the program

  • Click on the cog wheel Cog Wheel in the top right hand corner of the MaiaGrazing screen. This will take you to the 'Setting Dashboard'.

  • Click on 'Map Setup'. This will take you to the map setup screen.

Step 2: Import your map file

  • Hover your mouse over the  3 dots 3 Dots in the top right hand corner.

  • Click on 'Import Map File'.

This will open a new screen. That looks similar to the one below:

  • Open the location of your map file on your computer.

  • Drag (click and hold down your left mouse key) your map file from its saved location on your device.

  • Drop (release your mouse key) when the file is anywhere on the map screen.

If the map successfully imports you will see the paddocks/pastures shaded in blue appear on the map.

The paddock/pasture names from your map file will be imported and will appear on the screen underneath map box.

Row 1: displays the name of the paddock/pasture. This comes from the imported file.

Row 2: displays a drop down box where you can either create a new paddock/pasture or match this paddock/pasture with a paddock/pasture that is already in the system.

Row3: Displays the area of the paddock/pasture. This comes from the imported map file.

Step 3: Choose which paddocks/pastures to import.

All imported paddocks/pastures are automatically selected for import.

  • Scroll down the page to see the list of paddocks/pastures to be imported.

  • Click on the tick box to the left of the paddock/pasture name to remove the tick from the box. If this box is not ticked then this paddock/pasture will not be imported.

If you have already setup some paddocks/pastures manually in the program you will need to complete Step 4 below.

Step 4: Match manually entered paddock names with imported paddock/pasture boundaries.

If you have already manually entered some or all of your paddock names into MaiaGrazing you will need to match the imported paddocks with the appropriate existing paddock name to avoid duplication.

To match an imported paddock boundary with an existing paddock name:

  • Locate the name of the paddock/pasture being imported from your map file (1)

  • Click on the drop down box to the right of the paddock name where it says Create New Paddock. (2)

  • Click on the name of the paddock from the drop down box to match your imported paddock/pasture boundary with paddock/pasture name that already exists.

  • Check the area of the paddock is correct. (3)

If there is no existing paddock or pasture then leave this drop down box set to Create New Paddock.

Saving your imported paddock/pasture boundaries

When you are ready to complete the import:

  • Scroll down to the bottom of the map import screen

  • Click on save.

If you have a lot of paddock/pastures to be imported it may take several minutes for your map file to save.
