Pasture Budgeting Using the Non-growing Season Grazing Plan

This article explains how to use the non-growing season graze plan as a pasture budgeting tool to determine if your current pasture will be adequate to meet the needs of a selected mob for a set amount of time.

Step 1: Create a New Grazing Plan

  • Click on the 'Planning' tab (1)

  • Click on 'Grazing Plans' (2)

  • Click on '+ New Grazing Plan' (3)

Step 2: Enter the pasture budget/plan details

  • Click on the drop down box under 'Grazing Plan Type' (4)

  • Click on 'Non-Growing Season'

  • Click on the data entry box under 'Plan Name' (5)

  • Enter a name for your plan/grazing budget.

  • Click on the drop down box under 'Start Date'

  • Enter a start date for the period that you wish to pasture budget for (6)

  • Click on the drop down box under 'End Date'

  • Enter an end date for the period that you wish to pasture budget for (7)

Step 3: Enter details of mobs/herds

  • Click on the drop down box under 'Main Mob/Herd' (8)

  • Click on the name of the mob/herd for this budget.

To budget for multiple mobs select more mobs under 'Other mobs for scenario checking' (9)

Step 3: Enter details of paddocks/pastures

  • Click on the drop down box under 'Select Paddock/Pasture Groups' (10)

  • Click on the name of the Paddock/Pasture Group needed for this budget.

OR

  • Click on '+ add another paddock/pasture' to add individual paddocks/pastures.

Step 4: Enter assumed pasture levels

  • Click into the data entry box under 'Average Pasture Levels' (11)

  • Enter the amount of consumable pasture that you have available for animals to consume (average of all paddock/pastures).

  • Click into the data entry box under 'Target Residual To Leave' (12)

  • Enter '0'

Step 5: Check the calculations

  • Scroll to the very bottom of the grazing plan

  • Check the total forage demand (13)

  • Check the fodder available (14).

  • Check the percentage of carrying capacity that will be used for this period (15).

Step 6: Make adjustments to the plan

  • Repeat steps 2, 3, and 4 as required until you find a comfortable level of demand and supply.

Step 7: Save the plan for future reference

  • Click on 'Save Plan'

DO NOT COMMIT THIS PLAN TO YOUR CHART.

You can have as many pasture budgeting plans saved as you like.

You can also use this method to check scenarios for single mobs/herds or multiple mobs herds.

You can use this method for single paddocks/pastures or multiple paddocks/pastures.
