Merge paddocks/pastures together

This article explains how to join existing paddocks and pastures together in MaiaGrazing to make larger paddocks/pastures.

Before you begin

If you remove a fence to join two or more existing paddocks/pastures into a larger paddock/pasture, or paddocks/pastures then you record this in MaiaGrazing by using the paddock/pasture merge option.

This feature is for permanent changes to your paddocks and pastures and is not suitable to account for temporary, strip, or techno grazing.

Paddock Names: Before starting the paddock/pasture merge process, decide if you wish to continue using the existing paddock/pasture name for one of the new paddocks/pastures. Eg. paddock/pasture to be merged is called Hill and you wish to name the new paddock Hill. In this instance we suggest renaming the original paddock to Hill OLD by changing the name in Operations/Paddock List.

Date implications: If the paddock/pasture merge occurred some time ago and stock have subsequently grazed affected paddocks the graze history may not be correct and entering a paddock/pasture merge on a past date may cause this grazing history to be lost. When a paddock/pasture is merged it becomes superseded. Any transactions that occurred after the split date become void. Please contact Support Team for assistance in preserving your graze data in this instance.

Graze Plan implications: If the paddocks/pastures to be merged are included in a current or future graze plan then the graze plan may need to be updated.

Livestock: Make sure there are NO livestock in the paddock/pasture in Maia on the date of the split. If you do have livestock in the paddock/pasture move them into a yard in Maia. After you complete the paddock/pasture split, move the livestock into paddock/pasture they are grazing. If the fencing event occurred mid graze, you may have to use the open gates feature to effectively document the graze.

Same Day Transactions: A paddock cannot be both active and inactive in Maia on a single date. If there a multiple actions (splits or merges) for a paddock put them on separate dates. eg 1st Jan and 2nd of Jan.

Avoid Transitional Merges: DO NOT implement a merge for momentary transition, such as a merge then split (ie. a momentary paddock that will never capture a graze record). Instead, use the following method to lock in your ability to trace the performance of a single ha of land over time no matter how many different ways it is re-fenced.

For each of the affected original paddocks, use the "split paddock" function to split off the area to be allocated to the new paddock, you will need an approximate area. Give each fragment a transitional name using the word "temporary" and the paddock's original name eg Temporary Church. Now you can use the "merge paddocks" function to bring the fragments together into your new grazing paddock. Remember to separate the transaction dates by 24 hours.
